How meaning moves from culture to brand

Brand meaning transfer describes how cultural values attach to products and then to consumers through advertising, ritual, and use. Grant McCracken's Meaning Transfer Model (1986) maps movement from cultural world to goods to consumer, with advertising and endorsement as transfer rituals. The model still explains why celebrity partnerships succeed or contaminate.

What is the Meaning Transfer Model?

McCracken proposes three locations of meaning: the culturally constituted world, the consumer goods system, and the consumer's life world. Advertising and consumption rituals move meaning between them. A running shoe can absorb marathon mythology; a perfume can borrow celebrity aura; a protest aesthetic can poison a soda if context is wrong.

Why does transfer fail?

Meaning moves only when cultural context supports the link. Our Pepsi Finding is transfer catastrophe: resistance imagery without movement literacy. Influencer perfume ads fail when the celebrity's meanings clash with the scent story or audience ritual.

How should brands use the model?

Audit source meanings before signing talent or borrowing subculture symbols. Ask what ritual will carry the meaning (unboxing, wearing, posting, gifting). Plan withdrawal if cultural conditions shift.
