How to stress-test a name before you print anything

A brand naming process should fail names early, before business cards, signage, and vehicle wraps multiply the cost. I use a short stress test on every finalist: sayability, search footprint, trademark class, positioning fit, and expandability.

What is the sayability test?

Read the name to someone who has only seen it typed. Ask them to repeat it. If they hesitate or invent a different spelling, you will pay that tax on every phone call and podcast mention.

What is the search collision test?

Search the bare name and "[name]" + [category]. If unrelated firms, products, or memes dominate page one, you are buying confusion in organic and paid channels.

What is the trademark screen?

Run a preliminary trademark search in relevant classes before design invests. A beautiful name you cannot own is a lease, not an asset.

What is the positioning fit test?

Write the homepage hero using only the name and a verb. If you cannot state what the company does without apologizing for the word, the name fights the business.

Pass all five before you print. If you want a naming sprint with screens built in: hello@doxacreative.io
